Show Abstract
This paper describes the making and testing of dummy human beings to be used in experiments to discover the absorption of direct sound passing over the heads of an audience at various angles of incidence. It was found possible to make such dummies at small cost, for quantity production, which closely resembled human beings in their absorption and diffraction characteristics of at all important audible frequencies. A description of the materials and manufacture of the dummies is given in detail, together with details of test results, to enable other research workers to make them. An incidental result of the tests was the finding that the coefficient of sound absorption for human beings seated about 5 ft apart was almost double that of a closely seated audience at 2 kHz and above.

MEASUREMENT OF ULTRASONIC VELOCITIES IN SOLIDS UNDER HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE

Show Abstract
An ultrasonic method for determining velocity has been developed that is independent of phase‐change errors due to reflection of specimen waves from coupling films. The method also eliminates the possibility of error due to conditions of nonhydrostatic stress at a specimen‐transducer or specimen‐delay line interface. Preliminary data are given for Alcoa 2024‐T4 aluminum and are compared with results using the phase‐comparison method.

Show Abstract
Some salient results of an analysis based on Ribner's jet‐noise model of experimental studies of the noise field of full‐scale fitted with conical and eight‐lobed daisy nozzles are presented in this note. The results show the effect of the exhaust‐nozzle shape on the shear noise component of Ribner's model and importance of the noise contribution from the transitional region of the jet on the perceived noise levels (PNL).
