Show Abstract
This paper questions the results of earlier studies that sound that the submerged diver loses the ability to localize sound. Preliminary data indicate that a diver can localize a sound source that is a maximum of 10° off the midline and in front. Further data are presented that show that a diver in a reverberant tank is able to hear the effect of a highly reflective (air‐Plexiglas) target placed 1 ft in front of a speaker emitting broadband clicks at the role of 27/sec. Demonstration of auditory localization and echo detection by a submerged diver should raise same questions about the whole notion of degradation of the auditory function in the submerged human ear.
